Perhaps It Is Time to Pity the Poor Food Delivery Person

Arguably, people involved in the food service business are the most under-appreciated and under-compensated people in any industry. Yes, waiters at a fancy restaurant can often make a very decent living, sometimes through a basic minimum wage paid by the restaurant itself with the rest of their income coming from tips left by satisfied customers. In these types of restaurants, where service is expected to be top-notch, waiters and waitresses often definitely earn their living. They have to adhere to high standards of service, and anything less than excellence is unacceptable. At the other end of the food service scale are those who deliver food to your home from a local restaurant or other establishment. More often than not, theirs is a low-paying job that provides little, if any, satisfaction. Perhaps the next time we open our door, we should take their situation into greater consideration.

A Somewhat Thankless Task

If you are at a restaurant and your food arrives cold or not prepared the way you had expected, it is easy to send it back to the kitchen and ask for it to be completely redone. Most times, the waiter will not be blamed for this unfortunate situation. But when you order, say, a pizza from an establishment in your neighbourhood and it arrives either cold or with the wrong toppings, who exactly do you blame? Often, the poor delivery person gets the brunt of the customer’s exasperation. It could very well have been the fault of the person taking the order over the phone or the person who prepared the pizza itself. But the only person you interact with is the one who knocks on your door.

What Is Fair?

There is also the completely voluntary and somewhat nebulous question as to what type of a tip the delivery person should receive. In many restaurants, a gratuity is included in the final bill, ranging anywhere from 10% to 20%. Typically, home delivery companies don’t have that type of mechanism in place. Therefore, the delivery person is at your mercy. Different people use different approaches to figuring out how much they should tip. Some consider what the weather is like: They feel that if it’s a balmy summer evening, the tip should not be the same as if it’s in the middle of a freezing winter storm. Others take that factor into account and add how far the delivery restaurant is from their home. The farther it is, they figure, the more the delivery person should receive. Others also take into account the overall cost of the meal. The pizza is likely to cost far less than a full order of sushi. They feel the delivery person should be paid the same, regardless of the cost of the total order.

Do Your Speciality Food Shopping Online

Most Muslims here in the UK cannot typically order anything from one of their local restaurants, as the meat that these dishes contain does not meet their religious guidelines for the processing of the meat itself. In other words, it is not considered Halal. However, if you would like some high-quality Halal meats delivered to your door, all you have to do is click here. You will find a delicious assortment of completely Halal meats at exceptional prices, which will be sent directly to your home. How much you decide to tip the delivery person, of course, is all up to you.
