Tips For Having A Baby On a Budget

Posted on November 19, 2016 by Daniel at 10:21 pm

It seems like everyone is always talking about how expensive having a baby is. From all the things you’ll need in their nursery, to the diapers and changing gear, to high chairs and strollers. The list of must-haves for a baby is enough to make a person’s eyeballs pop out of their head.

There are plenty of ways to get around spending an arm and a leg, however. Notice how babies have been birthed for thousands of years now – well before the Baby Bjorn or ergonomically essential sippy cups were invented.

Here are some ideas for getting what you need, but not having to throw down a pile of cash all at once.

Get a Secured Credit Card

By getting a credit card for emergencies or big purchases that you simply don’t want to buy used, like a car seat, or an electric breast pump, you are setting yourself up for extra insurance against all sorts of things that could go wrong.

Opt for a secured card, which can save you a lot of money on annual fees as well as increase your chances of getting approved if you don’t have the best credit in the world.

Accept Hand-Me-Downs

If you have a friend or family member that has already had a baby and has old stuff they’re willing to give you, there is no shame in that! Take the hand me downs and never look back! Your baby is going to poop, puke, sneeze, drool, and pee on everything for the first few months anyway, so used clothing is ideal.

Why spend a bunch of money on high fashion when your baby is going to grow out of it in the amount of time it takes you to take a shower.

See If You Qualify for State Healthcare

In many states, if you qualify within the income limit your prenatal care and delivery will be 100% free. This is a great way to cut thousands of dollars. Otherwise hiring a midwife for a home birth is also a low-cost option which has become increasingly trendy and regarded as an empowering experience.

Hit Up The Thrift Shop

*Cue Macklemore song* From toys to clothing, to high chairs, to anything else you can think of, a second-hand store is the only way to go. You can find things that are in excellent quality that simply didn’t get worn and were donated. If you don’t want to go for second-hand clothes for your baby, then you could order baby products from online baby shops kent or nearby. Buying from an e-store (such as Little Poppets & Co) might allow you to get quality accessories for your little one at an affordable price.

One thrifting tip is going to thrift stores near affluent neighborhoods. They are generally more full of higher quality items and things are less “picked through” since many of the neighboring residents in that area live comfortably without the desire to thrift.
