The Top Brands and Their Changing Logo’s

There are many companies all over the world that have changed with the times, rebranded their company which includes changing the corporate logo. There are also many companies that stick to what they have and do not look to move with the times and these companies can often get left behind.

Rebranding your corporate identity is not something that any business owner should take lightly, or be scared of. Some changes can be seen as very drastic, whilst others are very subtle and are hardly noticeable to the untrained eye. Many iconic brands from all over the world that the majority of people know have been through changes throughout the years.

The Evolving Logo of Shell

Shell as a company started out in 1833 and was set up by a man called Marcus Samuel. The shop was originally selling shells which were extremely popular then and began importing and exporting other types of bric-a-brac. The company then merged with Royal Dutch Petroleum in 1907 so that both RDP and Shell could consolidate their share of the market and compete with Standard Oil. The original logo was designed in 1900 and was just a drawing of a clam shell. This logo was in black and white and it wasn’t until 1948 when the logo changed to something more recognisable with the yellow and red colours. Since 1948, there have been numerous different incarnations of the logo, with the changes being very subtle.

BMW through the Ages

Bavarian Motor Works was founded in 1916 and was initially making aircraft. With the terms of the Versailles Armistice after World War I, they were no longer allowed to make aircraft so instead turned their attention to motorbikes and cars. The BMW logo has not changed a great deal since 1923, apart from during the 1970’s. This blue and white of this famous logo is said to represent the propeller of an airplane, which was a throwback to the company’s origins making aircraft, and the subsequent banning of the production of weapons after the war.

The Changing Face of Pepsi-Cola

Pepsi-Cola was originally sold in 1893 but was then known as Brad’s Drink. In 1898, it was then changed to Pepsi-Cola, and then in 1961 it changed its name to Pepsi. In 2014, they reverted back to the name Pepsi-Cola. During the company’s history, the logo has changed quite significantly over the years. Up until 1950 the logo consisted of red text. It then changed to the famous red, white and blue colours that we know today. The logo has constantly been evolving since then, with a new rendition of the logo being made every 10 years or so.

Apple’s Iconic Logo

Compared to some of the previous companies that we have mention, Apple is a spring chicken in comparison as the company was formed in 1976. The original logo depicted a scene where Sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity whilst sitting under an apple tree. However, this logo was changed the same year and simplified considerably by depicting a multi-coloured apple which has a bite taken out of it. This logo stuck until it was changed in 1998 when the colours were removed and the logo was then solid black. Again, in the year 2000 Apple decide to change their logo to a mono-chrome format, which is still in use today. With the popularity of Apple products, this is one of the most recognisable iconic brands out there.

The Many Logo’s of Mazda

Mazda is a company that has seen many different incarnations of their logo over the years, and it is safe to say that the first logo looks nothing like the latest logo that you see on their automobiles. Mazda was founded in 1920 in Japan and their original logo had only the text of their name, with no symbol, unlike their modern logo. Over the years the company has thrived on being innovative and experimental, which comes across like in the many permutations of their logo that have been seen over the years. The current logo was implemented in 1997 and it is still being used today. It is formed by a circle encasing a winged M, which is meant to depict the company spreading its wings for the future. Mazda is a well-known brand all over the world with the famous MX-5 revitalising the small sports car which went into decline in the 1970’s.

Embracing the World of Change

Although a lot of the companies that are mentioned above operate in different markets, they all have one thing in common, which is embracing change. It is very easy to stick with what you know and frown upon change, as we all like to be comfortable and remain in our comfort zones. Most successful companies embrace change and welcome corporate rebranding, as this is a way that they can keep their brand identity fresh.
