Four Ways To Get The Money You Need To Renovate Your Home

Posted on March 26, 2017 by Daniel at 6:03 pm

If it’s time to renovate your home you’re going to need some extra cash. Maybe you’ve been saving up for the renovations you need and already have the money. However, sometimes the need for home renovations can sneak up on you.

Maybe your kids are all teens now and you’ve realized you have a need for a second bathroom. Maybe you have a new baby on the way and there isn’t a room for them. Or maybe you simply want some extra space for family fun.

Get A Second Mortgage

If you don’t already have the money saved up for your renovations, one of the main ways most people get the money they need to make major changes to their home is through a second mortgage. It’s kind of a way to have your house pay for itself, and you can try to negotiate a lower interest rate as well.

It does help to have some idea of how much the work you want to have done will cost, so you know how much money you’re aiming for. For instance, you’ll probably need your electrics rewired which would mean talking to an electrician near you. For each aspect of your renovation, talking to the tradesmen will help you have an idea of how much it will all cost. Your second mortgage may be more than enough to cover the remodel, so what will you do with the extra?

Apply For A Personal Loan

If a second mortgage is out of the question, you might want to think about getting a personal loan. If the work you need done is only going to cost a few thousand, a personal loan should give you need. You’re going to want to go at this with decent credit to keep down the cost of interest rates, though.

Have A Living Estate Sale

Rummage sales, yard sales, even selling things you have that might be worth something on Ebay are all good ways to make some extra money. Consider having a living estate sale, so to speak. If you have antiques and collectibles, these things can bring in a good amount of money, and if they’re just sitting in boxes in your attic why not let them go to good homes?

This is also a great way to clear up space for the renovations to happen. There will be fewer items to move into a storage unit if you’re having some major work done. And, you can always replace some items, like older furniture, with newer items to make your home look more up-to-date once the renovations are completed.

Try Out Crowdfunding

Crowdfunding is helping people get the money they need for whatever they need money for. The better your campaign the more you can get, and the more people will share it (meaning you’ll even have strangers making donations). If you can create a successful crowdfunding campaign, you can get your friends, family, and strangers to pay for your renovations and you won’t owe anyone a thing!
