If you’re looking for a career in the healthcare industry that will allow you to help people without having to go to school for decades, being a medical assistant might be just the thing for you. However, the last thing you want to have happen is that you put yourself through school, bringing on debt and stress, just to find out that you’re not actually a good fit for this type of work. So to help you see if this is a field you’d really excel in, here are three qualities that would make you a good medical assistant.

Good Bedside Manner

To be successful as a medical assistant, you have to have good bedside manner. What this means is that you need to be able to communicate well with both patients and other medical professionals in times where you might be stressed, tired, or just plain irritated. According to Career Builder, medical assistants are often the first people that the patients see when they’re visiting a doctor, meaning that you can help set the tone for the entire appointment. Not only can you make scary medical procedures more peaceful for your patients, but being approachable and courteous can also help you to get more job opportunities in the future as well.

Organizational Mastery

As a medical assistant, you’re going to have to be dealing with a lot of paperwork regarding the patients you’re working with. Because of this, it’s crucial that you’re able to keep yourself organized and stay on top of all the work that will be coming your way. According to Caitlin Murphy, a contributor to Work It Daily, you’ll be the point of contact for most of your patients throughout the day as well as having to do your tasks with the patients that are at your office. Juggling all this work can be a challenge, which is why being very organized is a big plus.

Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

When you have patients that come into your office with medical problems, you have to be able to think on your feet. While you’re not going to be the one doing the diagnosing or giving them treatments for their issues, Shannon Lee, a contributor to Real Work Matters, shares that you will have to problem solve with the more administrative tasks regarding your patients. This means having to deal with pharmacies, other offices, doctors, insurance companies and more. So if you have a hard time thinking critically about things or quickly solving complex problems that come your way, you might want to consider another profession.

If you think being a medical assistant could be right for you, consider using the information mentioned above to see if you have some of the necessary qualities to success at this career.
